"Inquire after" is USCIS's service-request threshold for that office: if your receipt date is older, a case inquiry through official channels is reasonable. Sort any column; numbers show months.

Working and traveling while you wait

The I-485 queue is long enough that most applicants keep living their lives inside it: the I-765 work permit (category (c)(9)) and the I-131 advance parole document exist exactly for this window. File them with the adjustment application, not after — the published ranges on those pages are the reason. Leaving the U.S. without advance parole in hand abandons the green card application; this is the single most expensive mistake in the whole process.

Reading the table like an insider

Three habits make this table genuinely useful. First, compare your office against neighbors in the same state — local interview capacity dominates, and the directory makes the spread visible in one screen. Second, watch the trend marker rather than the raw range: an office that improved two months in a row is a different animal from one that slipped, even at the same window. Third, sanity-check your own file hygiene before blaming the queue: address changes reported, notices answered, biometrics attended — a lost notice is the most common self-inflicted delay.

None of this requires a lawyer. But if your case is well past the upper bound, your inquiry went nowhere, or an RFE turned into something worse, that is the moment a licensed immigration attorney earns their fee — and this site, again, is not one.

I-485 questions

How do I read the I-485 processing times?

Pick your field office, then read the range: about 80% of family-based I-485 cases at that office finished between the lower and upper numbers. The "inquire after" date is the case inquiry threshold: if USCIS received your application before that date, you can formally ask where it stands.

Why is my friend's office faster than mine?

Interview capacity, local case mix and staffing differ by office, so the same application can take twice as long across town. The field office table shows the spread — published numbers, not rumors.

Can I work while my I-485 is pending?

Yes — file Form I-765 with your adjustment application and you can receive an EAD without waiting for the green card. The pending-I-485 EAD category (c)(9) has its own published range on the I-765 page.

What if my case is older than the published range?

First make sure you were reachable (address change reported, notices answered). Past the upper bound you can submit a case inquiry outside the normal window, and a slow case with an RFE or a name-check history is one an immigration attorney can evaluate — this site does not give legal advice.

Does premium processing apply to I-485?

No. Premium processing covers I-140 and certain I-129 and I-765 categories — not adjustment applications. The I-485 clock is what it is; the estimator tells you where you stand in it.
